I The Roots, l’unico gruppo sulla Terra capace di concepire e realizzare musica Hip-Hop attraverso le strutture canoniche e il medesimo modus operandi di una live band: sei ragazzi scrivono parole e musica, entrano in sala d’incisione, talvolta chiamano qualche amico per suonare o cantare, registrano e quello che alla fine ritrovate su un disco dei Roots è… Jazz? Soul? Però ci sono degli mc’s (Black Thought e Malik B). E cos’è quella roba strana che fa quell’omone (Rahzel) solo con la bocca? Quante domande… La risposta risiede unicamente nella musica di questo incredibile gruppo di Philadelphia, che riproduce in forma più umana (usando il meno possibile apparecchiature elettroniche come campionatori e non usando affatto i giradischi) il concetto di sound Hip-Hop, facendovi inoltre confluire influenze dal vastissimo mondo della musica nera.

Ascoltare un loro disco è un po’ come assistere a una jam session in un piccolo club Jazz e, allo stesso tempo, trovarsi nel bel mezzo di un cypher all’angolo di una strada. Con “Illadelph Halflife”, il piccolo club Jazz si ingrandisce per accogliere più spettatori e far posto a un nutrito gruppo di amici (e che amici: Common, Q-Tip, Dice Raw, Bahamadia, D’Angelo, Raphael Saadiq…), le rime che ogni mc porta nel cypher sono quindi da competizione, anche se Black Thought e Malik B se la giocano ad armi pari già dalle prime battute (<<the attractive assassin, blastin’ the devil trespassin’/master gettin’ cash in an orderly fashion/message to the fake nigga flashin’/slow up Ock, before you get dropped and closed like a caption>> – “Respond/React”; <<y’all know the dynasty, the Roots repertoire/the lieutenant from the reservoir, serve the spar/the injurar, preditar of a competitar/I send mc’s where the paramedics are/at first, I’m like nah, I’m nonchalant from afar/then strike to cut the fake Rap star jugular>> – “Section”).

Traccia dopo traccia, lo show si fa sempre più caldo ed è impensabile skippare anche un solo secondo: godetevi, dunque, i seducenti cori delle Jazzy Fatnastees in “Episodes”, l’incedere ipnotico di “Push Up Ya Lighter” con Bahamadia, la calda voce di Raphael Saadiq nel bellissimo singolo “What They Do” (dove Black Thought ci dice due o tre cosette sullo stato attuale dell’industria musicale: <<the principles of true Hip-Hop have been forsaken/it’s all contractual and about money makin’/pretend-to-be cats don’t seem to know their limitation/exact replication and false representation/you wanna be a man, then stand your own/to mc requires skills, I demand some shown>>), la potenza lirica di “Clones” (Black Thought, Malik B, Dice Raw e M.A.R.S. scatenano l’apocalisse sugli artisti <<ten percent real, ninety percent invented for a fuckin’ record deal>>), i virtuosismi rumoristici di Rahzel e Scratch, la precisione ritmica di ?uestlove, la presenza di leggende come Common (“UNIverse At War”) e Q-Tip (“Ital”).

Tutti elementi che s’incastrano splendidamente in quel mosaico di perfezione che è “Illadelph Halflife”, un album che, nonostante la sua non breve durata (rasenta gli ottanta minuti!), presenta così tanti spunti che potrebbe essere ascoltato e riascoltato all’infinito. Alla loro terza prova, i Roots sono riusciti a superare i già notevoli risultati del precedente “Do You Want More?!!!??!”; questo disco rappresenta uno dei momenti migliori della loro carriera, nonché un’uscita imperdibile per tutti gli amanti dell’Hip-Hop lontano dalle logiche di mercato. <<For now, the Roots remain a little bit of an enigma, even to themselves. They have reached the level of their dreams, a major-label record deal and some international notoriety. But for all that, their concept has not yet blown up… And it is possible it won’t>>. Che Dio li benedica…
