Tony Touch – The Piece Maker

Quanti dj ci sono in circolazione? Tanti. Quanti possono vantare un’esperienza e una longevità come quelle di Tony Touch? Pochi. Pochissimi. La sua carriera passa infatti attraverso un numero infinito di mixtape e collaborazioni con gli artisti più famosi in circolazione, più o meno underground ma non per forza. La forza di Tony Toca risiede nella sua grande originalità e nella capacità di unire caratteristiche prettamente Hip-Hop con sonorità che richiamano la sua terra, il Porto Rico, strategia rafforzata dal suo caratteristico spanglish e che lo affianca a Cypress Hill, Big Pun e tanti altri.

“The Piece Maker” è il punto d’arrivo del suo cammino evolutivo, un concentrato di stile e ritmi, in sostanza ottima musica per ben settanta minuti fitti fitti. Il disco si apre con la traccia che dà il titolo all’album e subito le casse si spaccano in due: Tony e Premier si trovano a occhi chiusi, con un gran ritornello scratchato cui seguono le rime del maestro Guru. Che trio devastante! “Set It On Fire” ospita Busta Rhymes e la sua Flipmode Squad per un rifacimento di “On Fire” degli Stetsasonic, immancabili i Cypress Hill in “U Know The Rules”, episodio più cupo e riflessivo seguito dal Wu-Tang Clan che, con “The Abduction”, torna in parte alle atmosfere dei loro inizi con l’aggiunta di qualche contaminazione più digitale.

Tony seleziona con grandissimo intuito ogni collaborazione, in “Likwit Rhyming” ad esempio Dj Scratch spalanca le porte a Tash, Xzibit e Defari, combo eccellente, il pezzo più spanish è senza dubbio “The Return Of The Diaz Bros.”, dove Tony, Doo Wop e Pain In Da Ass rivisitano “Salsation” di David Shire. Spazio poi al crudo underground in “No, No, No” per gli Heltah Skeltah e Starang, ai grandi nome come Prodigy in “Basics”, a quelli meno noti come in “I Wonder Why?” con Keisha e Pamela Long, a un Mos Def che in “What’s That?” si esprime in un idioma non suo con risulti comunque gradevoli.

In pratica, andrebbero segnalate tutte le tracce, pena fare un torto a Greg Nice, Psycho Les e i D-12; ma per ultima però devo citare “Class Of ’87” con tre illustri vecchietti che rispondono al nome di Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap e KRS-One, che qui dimostrano di non aver perso per strada la loro grande energia. E che dire? Grande Mr. Toca…classe a tonyllate!
