The Roots – Home Grown! The Beginners Guide To Understanding The Roots

Prima di abbandonare definitivamente la Geffen, Black Thought e compari hanno pensato bene di tirare le dovute somme di quasi quindici anni di carriera, ma siccome estro e stile sono sempre stati dalla loro parte, ecco negli scaffali due dischi (attenzione: venduti separatamente!) che ad alcuni tra i brani più celebri dei The Roots abbinano inediti, live, registrazioni alternative e tutto ciò che possa far gola a un vero fan del gruppo.

Il doppio mereghetti della band (qui al suo primo greatest hits, alla faccia di chi ne sforna uno ogni due LP pubblicati) è dunque un’operazione curata e certosina, tanto nell’attività di selezione e raccolta delle trenta tracce quanto nel dettagliato commento offerto dal solito ?uestlove nei rispettivi booklet. Dato che la storia ha sempre bisogno di testimonianze che ne focalizzino i passaggi più significativi, ecco “The Next Movement”, “Silent Treatment”, “Act Too” con la gustosa partecipazione di Common, “Do You Want More?!!!??!”, “Double Trouble” con Mos Def, “Essaywhuman?!!!??!” e “Thought @ Work”, ma è solo prendendo in considerazione il materiale recuperato ad hoc per l’occasione che s’intuisce il valore del tutto.

Nel primo volume abbiamo infatti la possibilità di ascoltare una splendida versione bis di “Proceed”, “Distortion To Static” in un grasso mix a cura di Black Thought, la hit “You Got Me” cantata da Jill Scott e la possente interpretazione live di “It’s Comin”; nel secondo tocca invece ai robusti live di “Sacrifice”, “Break You Off” e “The Seed” in un meedley di ben sedici minuti, un bel remix di “Don’t Say Nuthin'” e “Din Da Da”. Insomma, in oltre due ore e mezza di durata “Home Grown!” arricchisce sia per quantità che per qualità il repertorio della band, facendo tappa in tutti i loro dischi (compreso il “Come Alive”) e confermando un carattere che non intende risultare banale neppure quanto si tratta di compilare un best of. Non resta che appurare il risultato di questa nuova esperienza targata Def Jam, colmando l’attesa con una scorpacciata di ottima musica.
