Dungeon Family – Even In Darkness

<<Presenting Dungeon Family, Mr. DJ’s on the drums/we spit the slickest shit from the gutters and the slums…>>. Anche nell’oscurità le stelle possono brillare e la Dungeon Family è una delle realtà Hip-Hop che può dimostrarlo: una line-up di artisti incredibili, come Outkast, Goodie Mob e Cool Breeze aka Freddie Calhoun, ci fa viaggiare all’interno di un mondo ancora sconosciuto, dove il Soul, la psichedelia e il Rap sono un tutt’uno.

A partire dall’intro, nel quale Backbone ci spiega il concetto di Dungeon Family, la vostra visione della musica non sarà più la stessa; prendete ad esempio il secondo brano in scaletta, “Crooked Booty”: ci sono così tanti stili e così tanto stile da perderci la testa, il brano comincia con uno splendido assolo di Cee-Lo, accompagnato da un pianoforte in sottofondo, per poi continuare con una scarica adrenalinica data da una batteria potentissima che accompagna per tutto il pezzo gli mc’s al microfono. Magica è anche la terza traccia, “Follow The Light”: un bel beat e le voci di Big Boi, Big Gipp e Cee-Lo che infondono la loro conoscenza a noi comuni mortali (<<darker than the Lochness monster’s dwelling/it don’t scare me, that’s fairy telling/but what about Hell and Heaven?/Nothing is that irrelevent, you must find yourself, your intent/don’t commit thyself, ‘cuz another nigga done did it/in and outta style like leather African pennants/stayin’ true to the spirit, follow the Ten Commandments>>).

Segue “Trans DF Express”, che conduce l’ascoltatore in una splendida dimensione grazie al ritmo dolce che accompanga le strofe dell’ennesima formazione differente. Quasi oniriche sono “On & On & On”, la quinta traccia sostenuta da rime al fulmicotone dei nostri eroi dello sporco sud, ed “Emergency”, probabilmente l’episodio meno riuscito, dato che fallisce nella composizione del beat. Ci si riprende subito grazie all’ottimo assolo di Breeze su “Forever Pimpin'” (gran bel pezzo che però dura troppo poco) e “6 Minutes”, nella quale tutti i membri della Family consegnano una strofa su una base a loro perfettamente congeniale. Incredibile, nel senso buono del termine, “White Gutz”, nella quale Big Boi, Big Gipp e Bubba Sparxxx tirano giù barre da antologia che si fondono a meraviglia col ritornello dal sapore molto Soul, il tutto ancora su una strumentale perfetta degli Organized Noize.

“Rollin'” è più melodica, la fanno da padrone le voci di André 3000 e Cee-Lo; grandiose quindi “They Comin’…”, con due strofe strepitose (<<it’s like the whole damn world is caught/now y’all whole motherfuckers is just rotten/like the CIA, the IRS, the DEA, the FBI and whoever else with three letters in they names/you think you quick on the draw puttin them ten times is mo better/we got all the superstitions they got all the cheddar/you don’t own nothin’/you bought from them we might as well say we just leasin’/ain’t no reason then why the preacher and his false teachins/keepin’ hot coals over your heads/yeah when I looked into your eyes I will see that>>), e “What Is Rap?”, nella quale Witchdoctor e Big Rube danno tutti i significati possibili a ciò che per loro è il Rap (<<it’s the heart and soul/of the niggaz, and these dirty red walls and toes/it’s a story of the day we lost all control/not the times we boss balled with hoes/not the rhymes we crossed-jawed with those/they flossed all they golds, and platinum too/lemme school these motherfuckers on what Rap been through>>).

Ma il vero gioiello del disco si annida tra queste due: “Excalibur” è indescrivbile, trionfale, epica, con rime da imparare a memoria e il cui concetto può essere riassunto attraverso il ritornello che recita <<we are the few/we are the strong/we are the proud holders of the Excalibur!>>. Il disco si chiude con “Curtains (DF 2nd Generation)”, preludio a un nuovo capitolo della Dungeon Family con tutti i suoi volti più giovani; finisce così un viaggio attraverso quattordici stazioni che non annoiano mai e che perciò vi consiglio quanto prima di intraprendere.
