C'è chi l'Hip-Hop lo interpreta in base ai gusti del mercato e chi prende spunto da se stesso, Kero One fa sicuramente parte di questa seconda categoria. Beatmaker, dj, mc, bassista, pianista (Moog e Fender Rhodes) nonché imprenditore, dato che la Plug Label è una sua creazione, l'artista californiano di origini asiatiche non s'è inventato nulla di rivoluzionario, ha semplicemente ascoltato fino allo sfinimento i dischi della Native Tongues rievocandone, oltre dieci anni dopo, tematiche, atmosfere e sonorità. Uscito nel duemilacinque, "Windmills Of The Soul" è un prodotto decisamente riuscito, a colpire è innanzitutto il fronte musicale, che tra tastiere, fiati e chitarre passa con disinvoltura dal Funk ("The Cycle Repeats", "Give Thanks") al Jazz ("Ain't That Somethin?", "My Story", "In All The Wrong Places"), omaggiando in maniera estremamente raffinata il sound degli A Tribe Called Quest. Sullo sfondo Kero disegna percorsi lirici molto rilassanti, la positività che lo contraddistingue traspare tutta in "Give Thanks", "Like A Dream", "It's A New Day", ma c'è anche tanto amore per l'Hip-Hop ("Keep It Alive!" e "The Cycle Repeats", quest'ultima sul writing) ed un pizzico di autobiografia ("My Story"). Mancano (magari ve lo stavate chiedendo) il sangue, lo skit con la sparatoria, la frecciatina al nemico di turno, il blasonato kick hi-hat snare hi-hat kick di Dr. Dre e il featuring fuori tema di un mc sufficientemente famoso; per fortuna però c'è tutto il resto.
