7L & Esoteric – DC2: Bars Of Death

7Esot2004Al loro terzo disco sulla lunga distanza, 7L & Esoteric si riconfermano un gruppo potente e in piena salute. “Bars Of Death” comincia esattamente dove finiva il precedente “Dangerous Connection”, di cui è infatti una sorta di parte due, ma ottiene risultati perfino (leggermente) superiori. La formula applicata dal duo bostoniano resta in concreto immutata, il loro è un Hip-Hop quadrato, preciso, lineare sia nei suoni che nel Rap, le radici sono evidenti e riportano alla luce gli insegnamenti dei maestri che hanno caratterizzato i due decenni scorsi.

Fin dalla sua apertura rockeggiante, “DC2” mette nero su bianco le proprie intenzioni: girando attorno a un insieme di argomenti non particolarmente vasto, 7L & Esoteric vogliono mostrarci il loro lato più irruento (“Ring Music“, introdotta dal wrestler Dusty Rhodes: <<The next time, you step in a ring with me. Because, as we start to watch this thang, I am the legend, you are the man, and there’s a mighty big difference between the two!>>), quello fumettoso (“Graphic Violence”) e quello impegnato (“Loud & Clear”, con la sua critica a George W, ne è un primo esempio: <<Holla in ya ear, sayin fuck George Bush loud and clear/get him out of here, show that cat the door/cause we don’t wanna hear that bullshit no more/you can look at this verse as a word to the wise/realize, open up your eyes/we got people overseas gettin blown to bits, and thrown in a ditch/while Bush is at the game, throwin out the opening pitch>>), il tutto attraverso un incedere musicale estremamente compatto.

Sparsi in diverse tracce del disco, ritroviamo gli immancabili Celph Titled, Apathy e Beyonder, più qualche nome meno caltisonante che gravita spesso attorno al gruppo, ossia Main Flow (Mood), K.T. ed Uno The Prophet; 7L viene invece affiancato da J-Zone, DC e ancora Apathy. Sono almeno tre le punte di diamante contenute in “Bars Of Death”: “Rise Of The Rebel”, classica traccia da braccia alzate e gola infiammata nei live, “Neverending Saga”, egregiamente prodotta da J-Zone, poi la bellissima “Touchy Subject”. Volendo sottolineare qualche lieve appunto, potremmo dire che, tutto sommato, 7L & Esoteric non appaiono particolarmente rinnovati dal loro primo LP (ma il secondo al microfono è sempre più bravo e sciolto) e di conseguenza qualche episodio funziona un po’ meno (“This Is War”, “Crab Move”); nel complesso, però, abbiamo di fronte diciannove tracce molto compatte e sessanta minuti esatti di ascolto: di materiale interessante ne troverete senz’altro.
